I just bought a D50 too. And a 18-70 and a 50mm f/1.8 that isn't here yet.

1) size (and weight). THe D70 is significantly larger (and heavier).
2) price
3) the D50 has better noise characteristics and has better images straight out of the camera.
4) the benefits of the D70 over the D50 weren't that great to me.

Price was a factor for me,I also had a few SD cards that I could use with the D50.The D50 suits me fine, for what I want it for I would choose it again.

For me it was pure price. I really liked the D70s, especially these features that are missing in the D50:

depth of field preview button
cable release compatibility
built in wireless flash remote

In the end, I found a deal for the D50 that comes with two lens (18-55 and 70-300) for $680 and it was hard for me not to take it.

They're talking about the little info display that is on top of the camera. It isn't backlit, so it is like a digital calculator where you need light to be able to see it.

ok, thank you guys for the quick reply.
i currently own a panny fz30 and i am seriously considering the nikon d50.
allthough i like the ability of the fz30 to shoot movies i cannot be content with the high noise and the low light capabilities. i mainly enjoy taking pictures in low light conditions and for that, almost every time, the fz30 needs a tripod and long exposures (not to mention a few tries) for the resulting image to be satisfactory.
for now, i'm looking to sell my fz30 and upgrade to the entry level dslr nikon d50.
the main disadvantages, as some have already indicated, are the loss of that all-in-one 12x leica lens and the image stabilization. well, as far as i've considered things, these two drawbacks are far outweight by the advantages that the d50 brings with. and, for the price, the d50 makes a terrific argument. now, i'd like a lens for the d50 that has good results and pretty good zooming capabilities and, also, comes for a good price. maybe you guys can tell me a little bit about that, as well.

actually i have found it to be a problem (not having a backlight on the lcd display), even taking pictures in moderate light... my solution is to just grab my mobile phone and shine it over the display

still, id rather it was backlit, or used the lcd display like the new e-330 and pany dslr
