You really have to stop down to about 8 at 300. However, it's pretty sharp right up to 200mm at the fastest apertures.

It's the old photojournalist adage: "F8 and be there." In this this case, it might be F11.

I'm also shopping for a budget tele, there's also the Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD Macro that I've mentioned here. It's a little cheaper and has a 6 year warranty, but I can't find anyone who have it. The Nikon one is also cheaper, the gray market version is $100.

Rey, it's just my opinion, but I would not deal with the "gray" market!.. Too risky. Have you done a search? Sigma is very well made, probably better in this case than Nikon. Or so I have heard...:!:

How close can these lenses focus for macro shots? They sound like good budget tele/macro lenses to me.

When you are in focus at the "1:3" position on the scale, a subject with an actual size of 3 cm will have an image size of 1 cm on the memory card, or film.

Hi. I'm using that lens with my D70. You can find some pictures here:

http://www.digitalpleasure.net/4i almost all macro shots were taken with that lens.
