Somehow I changed the focus area on my D50 the upper focus box (. How do I change it back to the center? The manual simply say to go into the AF-Area Mode menu and use the cursor-dial to move the focus area -- but the cursors simply move around in the menu, and nothing moves the focus box. What am I missing? Do I have to hold down another button while pressing the cursor-dial to move the focus box?

Thanks.

There are ONLY 5 focusing areas that you can select:
( )
( ) ( ) ( )
( )

As you move the cursor, the selected bracket is high-lighted (the bracket strokes become solid instead of hollow).

But to be honest, the high-lighting is rather hard to be noticed.

Yes, but how do I actually move and select between the 5 focus areas? In what menu mode? Pressing what buttons? In the AF-Area menu mode, the cursor-dial moves inside the menu -- it doesn't move the focus area box.

This is not a menu option. While looking through the viewfinder press the 4 way controller towards the AF area you wish to use. As you push the controller, you should see the AF area change to red then bold, bold being the area that is currently being used.

Okay, I guess I know what your problem is.

You might be using the wrong AF-mode.

FYRef my settings:

1. Press [Menu]
2. Find the <pencil> icon
3. Press the RIGHT cursor to get into it.
4. Find the <AF-Area Mode> menu
5. Only [Single Area] allows you to select the area brackets. [Dynamic Area] & [Closest Subject] don't.

EXIT the Menu before moving the control pad.

1) Turn on the camera.

2) press sutter button half way and release.

3) Push the 4 way controller down arrow one time.

The lighted box will move to center position. You can move the lighted box any where in the 5 position using the 4 way control button.

See English manual page 33.
