I was reading ken rockwells guide to the D50, and he states that he uses AWB, and I was curious so I did some test shots in my room and the pics I took with AWB are really off from what they should be...why is this? Ive read other posts saying the AWB was pretty goood...

I personally never use Auto White Balance. I prefer to have more control over how the picture turns out - and as you've shown, you can get better results manually.

Sometimes I like to use Shade for a "warm" look as well.

The biggest downside is that a lot of times when I change environments, I forget to set the WB properly.

I get the same thing, especially on indoor shots when the flash doesn't fire. It's one reason to use RAW, then WB is irrelevant.
