I own both lenses and like them both.

I originally had the 55-200 as part of a 2 kit lens bundle but I do a lot of wildlife and wanted the extra reach, plus i wanted some sort of macro feature, so i bought the sigma, intending to sell the 55-200, which i still have !!!!

55-200 is a good general purpose lens and has the advntage of beong very light, a sort of catch all walk about lens. results have been nice and it is fast enough to capture ducks, swans etc in flight. I did a heavy crop on a woodpecker and got a good result, so it resolves detail well.

the sigma does give me the extra reach and i like playing with the macro. i keep this on the camera most of the time, my results have been crisp and clean.

I would say for walk around the nikon is best, for deliberate shooting (ie you are on a mission) then i would want the extra flexibility that the sigma gives me.

After some more looking around, i think I'm going to go for the Sigma 18-200 as I don't want to change the lens each time i want a wide shot. As much as I want the Nikon VR, I can't seem to find it anywhere.

The Nikon 18-200mm VR is backordered. It'll be a while until the supply can meet the demand. Don't bother looking for this lens for a while.

I read that the 18-200VR can go up to $1500 on eBay on some days.:?

double the price is just not worth it too me at the moment since this is my first dSLR and i probably won't even notice the difference. i currently have the 18-55 and 55-200 but plan to buy the 18-200 sigma because i hate changing the lens each time. i might sell or keep the other two for backup and when the vr hype calms down and supplies meet demand, i'll probably make the switch.

For U.S. folks, I just saw this today, Adorama is selling the 55-200 for $160.
