welcome to the SLR world. SLRs use a reflex mirror to get through the lens viewfinding. that lens blocks the sensor so you cannot have a live image on the LCD. if you want that you have to go back to p&s, which is not a good reason to go back. If you must absolutely have the LCD preview, look into the olympus e-330 or the new panasonic/leica dSLR

Also, looking through the viewfinder of these DSLRs is a "what you see is what you get" affair. You can be assured that whatever you see in the viewfinder will be captured by the camera. Some point and shoot cameras which let you have a live preview in the LCD do not take the shot where you think the shot is going to be taken. So you may wonder afterwards why some shots from a P&S are off.

Are you wearing spectacles?

That's my problem too - I can't get my eye too close to the viewfinder, but I've got used to it.

p.s.

I also find the LCD screen of D50 very scratch-resistent.

Now that my US$200 spectlacles are heavily wounded (coating detached), by constantly rubbing against the LCD

But I can't find a single scratch mark on the LCD
