This is a great forum. I thought I would ask all you pros. Does anyone have any advice as to the best place to buy online? I've looked at bestpricecameras.com, thecamerapros.com, ritzcamera and b&h. They all have their pros and cons. Which would you recommend purchasing from? And has anyone purchased a kit off of ebay? The prices there are so tempting. I'm getting the Nikon d70s.

Thanks!

Amy

I purchased my kit on Ebay. Many brick and mortar stores also have an ebay presence (In Canada for examples...Henry's, Carmen's foto source, etc.) I saved just under $200.00 from what the retail outlet sold the kit for. I figure if something went wrong, at least I have an entity in my own country I can pursue. I have also dealt many times with Cameta on Ebay and have had nothing but great service.

stay far far away from those first twoo...you will be ripped off. people have mixed reviews of ritz/wolf, just be wary of their accesories and anything with the brand name quantaray. b&h whihle not the cheapest, is the BEST online dealer. Also check out digtial foto club, one call, beach camera those are good ones./

I bought my kit from ebay's Cameta: http://stores.ebay.com/Cameta-Camera

Others stores I or friends have used:

B&H: bhphotovideo.com
adorama.com
beachcamera.com (aka buydig.com)

If the prices are much cheaper that those above, chances are it's a scam.
Be sure to checkout resellerratings.com for ratings.

For used gears, people suggest KEH.com

B&H in New York. Fantastic service. Fast shipping. No problems.

Why are bestpricecameras & thecamerapros so bad? Have you heard of people not getting what they paid for or is it just lame customer service?

Some online stores are shady shops that try to rip you off.

I have been to B&H Photo and Adorama physical stores. They are real stores and they are legitimate businesses.

A lot of these stores are not really stores, they're just warehouses in Brooklyn that run website scams, using several website names.

They are not legit dealers, and they heavily discount their stuff since they don't really ship their stuff. They price the camera, but they remove the power supply, manual, etc. and ask you to pay a lot for them ($200 if you want the battery!). If you don't pay for them, you never see your stuff.

Here's BestPriceCameras.com's actual "store":

Thanks a ton. I went with your advice and ordered from B&H. Of course it was extra money, but I would rather pay than get ripped off!

I appreciate it...

Avoid Brooklyn based scam artists (where they seem to be able to get away with it).

Read Bryan Biggers Article:

How to Buy a Digital Camera without being Robbed

Then, compare customer feecback to the techniques Bryan mentions:
