When I first got mine, I used this as a down and dirty guide. Everything is explained very well for a person just jumping off: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d50/d50-settings.htm

I've since been using the basic Magic Lantern Guide for the D50. It's helped me refine some settings for my particular taste in color, saturation etc.

I would start with reading the manual.

Below are other good sites:
http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/enjoydslr/index.html
http://www.nikondigitutor.com/eng/d50/index.shtml

A great source, from what I've gathered, is Thom Hogan's eBook. I have no experience with it, but Nikonians tend to swear by it:

And of course, you can ask as here, but please read the manual first.

I agree that the Thom Hogan book is a great resource, however it's only available as an ebook. I like having a book I can bring me with me for reference, so I purchased the Nikon D50 Digital Field Guide when I first got my D50 and found it quite useful ...much more so than the manual.

Yes, this is a decent book:
Nikon D50 Digital Field Guide
isbn: 0-471-78746-9

You may also want to get photography technique books like Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. It'll help make sense about the technical terms like aperture and shutter speed, so you know what the camera is doing.

Another vote for this book... very easy to understand for the SLR n00b (like me!)
