I have a Nikon D70 with the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF prime lens and the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX APO HSM.

When using the 50mm, I often have to step backwards as far as I can to get some subjects into the entire frame, however, when I put on the Sigma, I am easily able to get the entire subject in the frame at 70mm.

I suppose it's because I have a misunderstanding of how lenses work.

I'd greatly appreciate some enlightenment on this subject.

...that is theoratically impossible!:?

Unless you have a teleconverter at the back of the 50, I can't see how it happens....and no, you do not missunderstand how lenses work!

I would be very interested to know what it is!

Nope, we don't have a teleconverter.

If we have the 50mm attached, we have to backup. If we attach the Sigma and set it to 70mm, we can get the entire picture in.
