Hi Banksy,
Another alternate, although this will hurt the pocket. After trying without sucess with my 70-300 vr, I saw Zig's birds and got a 70-200 vr. An amazing lens that is quite capable of close up shots. Down side is the cost, up side is that you get a great longer lens.

Thank you all so much for your different perspectives. Some alternatives I hadn't considered but will certainly check them out.
paniolo - my lens lust unfortunately doesn't extend to the 70-200mm even though I would in a heartbeat if I win the lottery!
