50mm lens were standard for 35mm film camera because it is similar view angle of our eyes. Now with DX size of sensor it shoul be cca 35mm. On DX sensor 50mm lens is aprox 75mm equival. to 35mm film camera and who today needs that lens?

The 50mm is a great portrait lens on APS sensor sized cameras. It's also a nice fast, moderate tele lens. It's small and lightweight and although a bit long for some indoor work, it's still a usefull lens. It's also dirt cheap for the quality.

One could argue who needs prime lenses anymore period. Quality, inexpensive zooms are now available, which wasn't necessarily true 10-12 years ago. Zooms are certainly more convenient to use and offer greater flexibility than primes. Better high iso performance of todays current DSLR's also somewhat negates the speed advantage that primes have.

Whether or not you need this lens depends on your shooting style and subject matter. All lenses have uses....all photographers don't have a need for all lenses.

That's a weird question.
Why would people have needed 85's in the past then?

As for the 50mm. It's cheap, small and fast.
