I currently have a D-70 with the kit lens and a Tamron 70-300 that I am relatively happy with, but I am finding I do need something faster for low light. Mostly things like kids ballet recitals, gymnastics, ice skating, etc. As the kids get older, I am sure additional sports will takeplace.

While I wish I could afford the 70-200 2.8 VR, it's not possible at this time.

I'm debating going with one of the following options.

1. One of the 2X-7X 2.8 lenses (Tamron, Tokina, Sigma)

2. Nikon 50 1.8 and 85 1.8 combo

3. Sigma 70-200 2.8

The way I see it, option 1 gives me good flexibility, not sure if it is enough range for my needs. Option 2 gives the best low light capability, but is the most limited on range. Option 3 might not be wide enough for all I hope to do.

In addition to the above, I will also be picking up an SB600 or 800 for improved flash, but that will not be allowed at the venues above.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

Well you sure hit one of my combos:G. That would be the 85-1.8. but I have the 50-1.4. This combination has worked well for me with indoor sports. Basicly because it has allowed me good crop quality with relatively good ISO.

I also have the SB800 and SB600. Outside of a few more feet, and the option of 'wasting such a powerful flash as the trigger flash' with the 800, you could save at least $100 plus going with the equally performing 600.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I was leaning towards the 50 and 85 combo, and saving the money on the SB 600 will make the Mrs. happy :-).
