Default Lens recommendation

Time for a lens upgrade, my setup feels a bit limiting now...
The 28-80 is not fast enough.

This is what I shoot, from most important to least, and how often (%)
  1. 3% Portraits (not yet, but soon. very important)
  2. 55% Events (i use a 28-80mm)
  3. 25% Outdoor sports (covered by 70-300)
  4. 12% Landscapes (stitching is fine for me. i stitch a 28-80)
Budget: ~$1000

Or $1500 if it can also do this and I sell some film bodies
Product shots (very often, but low res)
Indoor Sports (low res)

Weight/size/ is not an issue for me. I'm leaning towards a 24-70 f2.8...

The new Nikon 24-120mm f/4.0 VR might be a good bet for your portraits as well as some other things you've mentioned. It hasn't been reviewed yet, and won't come cheap. Otherwise, either of the Nikon or Sigma 24-70/2.8 lenses should do well.

For indoor sports, there's the 85mm f/1.8 or, if you can get away with it, an f/2.8 zoom like Sigma's 50-150/2.8 or 70-200/2.8 or the Nikon 70-200/2.8.
  • The lens is the thing.
  • 'Full Frame' is the new 'Medium Format'.

If you think portraits are going to be important, I would look into a used 85f/1.4D or 105/135DC lenses (FL depending on sensor type and personal preference, of course). Might throw the 180f2.8D in there as well, if you like some room to work.

F100, N50, 24f/2.8D, 85f/1.8D, 135f/2 DC D, 28-105D, 35-80D, 70-210D,
