I have a D50 with the 18-55 kit lense. I would like to add a tele lense and have been thinking of getting the matching Nikon 55-200 lense. I have notice that I can get a Tamron 28-200 XR pretty cheap. That lense would give me some added flexiblity. With the wider range I would not have to be switching lenses as often.
How does the Tamron compare to the Nikon in optical quality and performance? Another question I have is that Tamron has a newer 28-200 XR DI, which is quite a bit more that the plain 28-200 XR. How does that lense compare to the other two I am considering? My apologies if this has already been addressed previously. Thanks for any and all help. |

Hello. I have a 28-200m Tamron manual focus lens. I would rate it as an average lens. The Nikon brand lenses should be better quality. I have been a bit disappointed in the Tamron's reproduction of colors. But they keep putting out new models, so the newer models may be better. Good luck.

Consider getting Sigma or Tamron 18-200, I'd get those over the 28-200. You can then sell your 18-55. Another favorite is the Sigma 70-300 DG APO because of it's Macro capability. Nikon recently dropped the price of the 55-200, you're in luck if you decide to get that.

Nikon AF 70-300mm G for a cheap ($130) telephoto.
The 55-200mm lens appears to have slow autofocus. Is this the lens you mean? http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/55200.htm |
