Hi everyone,
I am about to upgrade to a DSLR from a super zoom and am looking at the D7000. My husband has a D90 with a Nikkor 16-85 lens and Tokina 11-16 lens. I would like a walkaround lens and perhaps another to compliment what we already have and to share lenses. My thoughts are the Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D and maybe a 70-300. We like to photograph landscapes, early morning and dusk scenes, travel and I love macro (that will be another lens down the track $$$$$). Many thanks for any suggestions you may have. |

Looks like you need some lenses that can cover up the higher zoom end. I'd suggest the 105 2.8G VR. This lens can be used as a macro lens as well as medium zoom lens for portrait.
You can also get the 18-200VR lens as a walk around lens for D7000. I have this lens mounted on my D7000 almost all the time. This lens will cover all your needs for anytime photography. |

The 18-200 tends to be soft so you might have to do major sharpness post processing for every image.
I would suggest you look at a 70-300 VC by Tamron.. razor sharp lens and a 35mm 1.8. Both have incredible image quality and I find myself using just these 2 lens 99.9% of the time. Seems I don't even need the 18mm wide angle anymore.

If IS is not that important the sigma 105 macro should be dropping in price soon, and the IS version was just announced by sigma.

Yup, IS, VR, VC and OS are all image stabilization.

The Nikon 16-85 and the Tokina 11-16 are very good lenses, as are the 50/1.8 and 70-300 VR that you mentioned. For your walkabout lens, I'd suggest another copy of the 16-85. The Nikon 105/2.8 VR Micro that jacobt mentioned, is also an excellent choice. If you think you might not need the image stabilization, and you think you can get away with 1:2.3 macro instead of 1:1 macro, the Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 is also a very good choice. There's a stabilized version, but it's not as good and it doesn't focus as closely either.

TCav, your point about another 16-85 makes perfect sense, I was thinking that was the way to go. All good suggestions from everybody which I will take on board and check out. Thank you all for your valuable input.
