Any recommendations? Autofocus is not important to both keep cost down and broaden choice.

I was looking at the Tamron 90mm and Nikon 105mm (non VR), but owner reviews of the Nikon 60mm swayed me that way. If you want macors of venomus snakes, get the Sigma 150, but for typical macro and portrait use, I liek the 60mm. I found the best price at J&R Music World, $389.95 shipped.

I have the Nikkor 60mm Macro and have used it with the D-50 where it works well, but not the D-40.

There will be times when it is not practical to use tripot. VR can be vrey helpful. This picture was taken with Nikkor VR105 hand held.
