Default NEW Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G AF-S ??

I’m considering either the NEW Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G AF-S Zoom or the faster but older Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S Zoom for by new to be D100. Does anyone know why the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G AF-S is about 1/3 of the price of the older AF-S lens (other than for the f-stops)??? Steve I see that you’ve tested the new lens with
the pre-production D100, did they include any info? Thanks…

i own the afs 28-70mm and have not regretted the purchase. the afs 28-70mm has better optics, less distortion, more weight and a higher asking price than the new afs 24-85mm.
you can do more research by visiting <a href="http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_zoom.html">www.naturfotograf.com/lens_zoom.html</a>, and <a href="http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikkor.htm">www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikkor.htm</a> and choose the one thats right for you.

Default 24-85mm vs 28-70 2.8 etc

The bad thing about the 24-85 3.5-4.5 is that it takes 67mm filters. (Filters are LESS important in digital. VERY important in Chrome film)
The 24-85 2.8-4.5 has a 72mm filter size, but it goes to half-life size reproduction ratio.
The 28-70 2.8 is SO HEAVY and LARGE, you will not want to take it out to shoot.
(that's why many of us stopped dragging a view
camera around)
After all, effective and enjoyable photography is quite simple: F 8 and be there !
This unalterable law of human nature.
When equipment gets GIANT, it's no longer fun.
Stay light, stay simple, tip the waitress well.

Default 28-70 f2.8 blocks D100 internal flash

Not sure if this is an issue for you, but the 28-70 f2.8 is quite large. Large enough that it blocks the internal flash. I use the internal flash on my N70 frequently to add a little fill flash outdoors. With the beautiful 28-70 f2.8, you can't. This alone has kept me from this lens...joe

Check out this website for the specs of the new AF-S 24-85mm, you can order this lens via Sammys or Canoga cameras for about $350 plus shipping.
