What is the better lens, for d40x?
Thanks

I own neither, but I'm contemplating the sane decision, so I've looked into it... a lot. I'm convinced that the Sigma is the better bet. They are about the same with regards to image quality, but the Sigma gives you the f/2.8 for when you really need it, a closer minimum forcus distance, and an extra bit on the wide end ( 17 vs. 18 is not as insignificant as it sounds ). There is a price difference to consider as well. At B&H, the Sigma is $389 ($429 for the HSM version), whereas the Nikkor is $280, or $350 for the genuine USA version.

Also, have you considered the Nikkor 18-135 f/3.5-5.6? It's IQ is on par with the aformentioned lenses, but at $300 (#330 USA), the extra tele range makes it the better deal IMO.
