I aquired a secondhand Nikkor 50mm 1.8 AF ~ 20 years old lens. It did not come with a manual. There is a small slider with an orange mark by it. I can't figure out what it does. I think it might lock the aperture to allow auto control by the camera??? Is that correct?

Yes, that should be what locks your aperture ring. If it is like most other nikon lenses i believe it has to be set at F/22 and locked for auto controls.
I personally shoot minolta so i am not 100% surebut 99.9%. |

Yep, That is to lock the aperture at F/22 when using a program mode.

sounds like you have a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8s N or the later MK II version. The slide switch is the minimum apeture lock.
