I own the Nikon D50 with AF-S VR DX 18-200mm lens.

I'm looking for some extra reach to photograph birds. Should I go for the Nikon AF VR 80-400mm lens or the new Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm lens?

The 70-300mm lens as a little less reach however, weights half the weight of the 80-400mm, has AF-S (instead of AF) and will cost about half the price of the 80-400mm.

For the price, the 70-300mm will be tough to beat. In reality, however, the difference between 200mm and 300mm is not all that significant, and won't get you all that much closer to your subject than the 18-200. If you're not on a budget, and have a tripod, the 80-400 is probably the better lens for birding.
