Will the Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Autofocus Lens for Nikon Digital SLR fit the D40? This lens sells for only $299.00 at sigma4less.com, whereas the Nikon 18-200 VR sells for $750.00. In general, I agree that you get what you pay for, but is this Sigma 18-200 any good? I know that Sigma just announced a new 18-200 with OS and reviews for that one will have to wait. Any thoughts about the older Sigma 18-200? Thanks.

The Sigma 18-200 has gotten some good reputation and it does fit the D40, however, since it's not HSM, it will NOT auto-focus with the D40.
Also, keep in mind that sigma4less is not an authorized Sigma USA dealer, so you do not get the usual 4 year USA warranty. Personally, I wouldn't get any lens (especially a super-zoom) with the D40 that doesn't autofocus. |

Thanks Rey. Do you know of any autofocus zoom lens that will fit the D40 in the 18-200 range, other than Nikon's 18-200mm VR? (which is way more expensive than I can afford right now.)

Also, from what I understand, the D40 is only available on a kit at this point, with a couple of possible kit lenses (18-55 and 18-135). If you get one of those, you can then get the 55-200 lens. Either the current one, or the recently announced one with VR. |
