Pardon my ignorance, but what is a TC 1.4 ? Is it what I used to call a "telextender" ?

Can I increase the length of my lens with an add on ? If so, how much $ and is it worthwhile ?

Thanks, Steve

According to Nikon the 70-300 VR is NOT compatible with their teleconverters. I'm not sure if the 3rd party ones would work, and if they do, you could lose full metering or auto-focus. In general, TC's are used on fast lenses. Depending on which ones, they could cost up to around US$400.

Thanks, REY. It seemed too good to be true. I must say there seems to be a lot of incompatible things in the Nikon line. A friend bought a Pentax 10D and is able to use his old time lenses. Mine are in my closet museum. Thanks for responding !

I think the main problem with using the 70-300VR lens with TC's is that it's not a fast lens. And since you lose light when you use TC's the camera may "hunt" when focusing. I've read that the Kenko ones (1.4x) work with this lens, but it does hunt at times, when there isn't enough light or at the long end. Nikon probably just decided that they don't want half-as# performance. But you should checkout the Kenko one if you want a longer reach, and will use it mostly on daylight.

Good Luck!

Thanks...again ! I understand what you say about the limits. Someone told me they'd seen a photo taken with the 300 and this tc thingy, so I wondered if it was possible. I do have a 2X converter that I used with my old 300MM 1970's Nikkor, but, as you say, it was like looking into a black hole. I'll check out this Kenko.

Thanks, Steve
