I have a Nikon D70 and saw some beautiful close ups that were
taken with a macro lens along with an extension tube. What does it do and which one can be used with the D70? Thx, John

The extension tub moves the lens further away from the camera. This allows the lens to focus much closer than without the tubes. This permits macro shots with a standard lens or super macro shots with a macro lens. A macro lens alone will normally allow focusing down to 1:1 that is life size, your subject is the same size as the D70 sensor. With extension tubes you'd be able to take shots of subjects smaller than the sensor and still have them fill the frame.

The D70 manual tells you which tubes are compatible with the D70 under the heading optional accessories (page 183 in my manual). In short it's the Nikon PK series but there are limitations (no auto focus, manual only exposure and no matrix metering).
