I want to upgrade my D50 kit lens (the 18-55 F3.5-5.6) to a faster model, and have found that Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC and Tamron AF SP 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di-II LD ASP IF are almost the same price (Nikon's own model is out of the question at three times as much!)
Does anyone know which of the two is better, if there's any real difference at all?

I have the sigma and think it is simply fantastic at the price. Judging by the reviews the tamron is even a little bit sharper. You can't go wrong.

Unfortunately the Sigma is more like 19-45mm, word has it. The Tamron is true 17-50mm.
Tokina will be releasing the 16-50mm next year. Might be worth the look. Also take into consideration the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC Macro, an exceptionally fast and sharp lens.
