The Sigma is faster and sharper if you get a good copy... and most of the newer batches seem to be good copies. It's a DC (i.e. DX) lens meaning it's digital only... this will save you some size/weight but not be useable on film or future full-frame sensor cameras. It also has HSM (Sigma's version of AF-S) meaning it will focus much faster than screw-drive on lower-end bodies (D50, D70, and even D200). HSM/AF-S is also a requirement for the D40 and D40x to autofocus since they have no internal auto-focus motor.
