Regarding the AF speed...

It looks to me like Nikon may have help the Tamron and Tokina in the D300, as to my astonishment the "screw" drive motor in this body is relatively fast on non AFS lens, at least on the shorter zooms that I have tried, even in dim light. May be I need to check on the longer telephotos without HSM or AFS where the larger internal optical blocks are heavier to displace...

The other surprise was that this in-body mechanical drive is also relatively quiet when compared to the USM/HSM lens that I have. I know the A-700 is already fast in this department, but don't know if the motor in the D300 is less torquy or just more silent - May be that the lenses I tried are just so new that they are still well oiled...:-):G
