I have a D80 with 18-135 kit lense. I need at least 300mm for sports, so I am considering the 70-300 VR and for walk around I am consideing the 16-80 VR. Will this make a good combination in addition to a speedlight or can I do better?

Of course you can always do better if you have an unlimited budget!

Kidding aside, the Nikkor 70-300mm VR lens is good for outdoor events but is considered slow for indoor sports. On the other hand, good lenses for indoor sports will cost you in the $2k-$5k range to get that f/2.8 aperture that yields decent shutter speeds.

I have the Nikkor 70-300mm VR lens and was able to capture birds, such as gulls and Canada geese, in flight so most sport shooting should be possible if you jack up the ISO enough to get fast shutter speeds.

The 16-85mm VR is new but seems to be getting good reviews. I'm still waiting for capital approval to get one for myself. I do use the 18-70mm kit lens for midrange zoom shooting. I personally prefer using the Sigma 10-20mm or the 70-300mm VR when outdoors and keep the 18-70mm for photojournalism or indoor type shots.

The 70-300 VR is definatly for outdoor sunny days, mostly baseball.

The 16-80 will be the all around indoor and outdoor lense.
