As a new shooter, would the F1.8 be good enough or should I spring for the more expensive F1.4?

Both are very good. I personaly have the 1.4 but if I did not get it at a very good price I would have bought a 1.8. As far as sharpness and color rendition I don't think there is any difference. The extra stop is the deciding feature in the 1.4

If you don't need the extra speed you don't need the extra expense.

The defferance between 1.8 and 1.4 is only a half of a stop. Now how much is that worth.

Also depth of field is so paper thin at F1.4, getting everything you want in focus is difficult, especially at closer distances. I think you also have to consider how much you'll use this lens. It's a bit of an awkard length indoors, and a bit short for outdoors. Unless you're doing alot of outdoor portrait work, or have a need for speed, it doesn't matter which is better, because you'll rarely use it. I'm not on the "the 50 is must have lens" bus anymore.

I think the f1.8 is the better, and more practical choice.
