I am going to buy a wideangle lens to my Nikon D300.

Have looked at Nikon 12-24/4 and Nikon 14-24/2,8.

What would be a smart choise here? Is the 14-24 overkill to the D300 as it´s not a FX camera?

I take a lot of climbing pictures (bouldering) som need a good quality lens. We often climb in bad light situations ....as almost always the boulders/stones are in forest´s. Then sometimes some boulders can be in open light areas with perfect light...like in the Alps, next to the sea.

Sharpness all the way out to the edges is important!

Thanks!

Either lens is very good. Neither are terribly great wide open at the minimum focal length and there is some distortion, which is to be expected for a wide angle lens. The 14-24 seems to be the better of the two..you have to decide if you need the extra 2mm, which is pretty big at these focal lenghts. Personally, I have the Sigma 10-20. I like the extra width, and it is sharp stopped down...which is how you'll likely be using an ultrawide angle anyway. I have a good copy...there seems be quite a bit a sample variance on this lens.

You may want to take a look here (in bad light):
