I am trying to decide whether or not to keep the VR 18-200mm lens that I bought in addition to the D80, with kit lens. Does the VR really help all that much with picture quality? It was rather expensive. The kit lens is 18-135mm, which is pretty good, just not VR, which I have never had before. Would love a response.

Thanks

IQ wise, the 18-135 is a touch sharper but has a more limited range, and is prone to flare when shooting into bright light. The range of the 18-200 is tough to beat, but there are some distortion issues. if i had to choose one or the other, I'd take the 18-200. If I had the long end covered by another lens, I'd probably go with the 18-135. I own both and use both.

Thanks for the reply. Were you referring to the VR also? That has me wondering, whether to keep that lens or not. I don't usually have much hand shake, and it is an expensive lens. I do already have a 55-200mm lens, older, that would work with the D80. I bought the D80, as replacement for my D50, thinking I will get better pictures. I also bought a SB-600 speed light flash, which does a great job. Hmm, I read that lens are the best investment, however, don't megapixels count too? I know the D80 has a different processor in it. Decisions, decisions. The newer lenses have a larger diameter for some reason. Rambling, sorry. I guess I wonder if the D80 is going to take a noticable better picture than the D50. I do operate on automatic alot. Would love to hear back from you.

The 18-200 is only available as a Vr lens.

The D80 is a step up from the D50 with extra features and greater resolution. You'll have more latitude for cropping. However, the extra features don't always equal better pictures. If you're taking bad images with the D50, you'll still get bad images with the D80. If you can't get good images, it's not the camera. If you understand the basics of photography, and have been getting good images with the D50, the D80 will produce slightly better images.

Thanks so much. I think I need to put more effort into what I learned in the camera class that I took. Your reply has been a big help. I do love this forum.
