I got hold of this lens from a friend who has no longer need for one (cheap too <$300.00), as I also need something really light for my kayaking and this seems to fit the bill: http://blogs.salon.com/0004217/2004/11/18.html

This lens is not designed for actions (i.e. you do your own focusing), but for non-moving subjects it works beautifully - In case anyone is interested here are some test shots:

-> I have to try really hard to get thoses out-of-focus donuts...

I feel compelled to point out that photographers were shooting action long before Auto-focus was invented. It just takes a little practice. So don't leave the lens at home next time you go to a ball game, and have fun.

NHL : If you get practice with the Nikon R. f8.0, will be a great lens, I took this pic, 2 years ago, in the afternoon, maybe a half mile, and croped, is important to have a lot of light or contrast.........Carlitin

Carlitin

Thank - I really like this lens...
-> It's the only 500mm that I can take easily on my bicycle rides down the Potomac trails!

I finally manage to capture the 'rings' sucessfully:
