Hi can anyone tell me if this lens will fit on a Nikon D40 Nikon AF fit 75-300 APO lens as my husband new to photography and I want to get him a new lens thanks

Welcome. What do you mean by "Nikon AF fit"? Is this a Nikkor lens or a third party lens like a Sigma (Sigma used to make a 75-300mm f/4-5.6 APO AF lens, but it's discontinued now). That lens will not Autofocus on a D40.

The D40 camera body does not have a focus motor built in. So, unlike most other Nikon models, you will need to buy lenses that do have a focus motor built in if you want Autofocus.

That rules out the vast majority of lenses you'll find for sale in Nikon mount.

In Nikon lenses, you'll need to go with an AF-S lens. AF-S stands for Silent Wave Focusing, which means that the lens has a focus motor built in.

In Sigma lenses, you'll want to find a lens with HSM (Hypersonic Motor), which is Sigma's equivalent to AF-S.

In Tamron lenses, you'll need to make sure it's a newer design with a focus motor built in (they've started adding motors in Nikon mount lenses for compatibility with the D40, D40x and D60, which are the Nikon bodies without a focus motor built in). I don't know of a good way to tell other than to check with the dealer on those (you'll see the same lenses with and without focus motors in some cases).

P.S.

I've moved this thread down to our Nikon Lenses Forum, where you may be more likely to get suggestions from Nikon dSLR owners.

I'd give members an idea of your budget for better suggestions.
