I just purchased a Sigma 30mm f1.4 for my D80 and I really like it. However, when I was getting ready to buy, I looked at the Nikon 50mm f1.8 (I think that was the f-stop#). There was a major price difference. Can some one explain why, it just sorta shocked me and I am trying to find out why. Thanks alot in advance for your time.

Hi Walt,

Both Nikon and Canon have their basic 50mm f1.8 lenses which are pretty much the cheapest lens in both ranges but they still give good quality.

Getting the faster aperture costs more so this is one part of the equation with the Sigma also there are higher performance elements and a faster focusing HSM motor.

That's about it :-)

Mark,

Thanks, I sorts figured that the faster aperture had something to do with it. But I thought that Sigma was a lesser brand, I apprecaite the help.

Like everything they have various ranges. The EX series is the higher quality lens from Sigma. In fact my most expensive lens is a Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 which currently goes for about $2500 and it is top notch. I have 2 other Sigma lenses in my kit as well as 4 Canon ones so Sigma does produce some good kit.

Not in this case as most 50mm f/1.4 are pretty old in design dating back to their film days
... and this Sigma glass is brand new being just released: http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/..._c16/page2.asp

You can also see why the Sigma may cost more as well: It's twice as big as the old Nikon with larger glass elements (hence more expensive) which will provide better image quality on a full-frame camera than any regular 50mm - Check the review

-> You might be surprised with several other Sigmas such as their 70mm f/2.8 macro as well... It's probably the sharpest lens at this moment and is the lens of choice for testing full-frame camera because of its minimum distortion since 2007 on SLRgear:

the sigma 30mm is a digital lens made for the smaller format.smaller optics cheaper to build.and the 1 f stop will increase the amout of the product by 100J%

I need to learn alot more before I post anything. I do like the 30mm lense, however, I think the 50mm might of been a better choice for my lack of experince:?!
