Default Just bought a used D2H... what short lens?

Hi there,

I just bought a used Nikon D2H. Holy crap is that thing fast!

It came with a 70-300 lens, and a fixed 50mm lens. I was just taking photos of my kids going off of the diving board with the fixed 50mm, and I have to stand waaay back to get them in the frame.

I need a decent zoomable lens for short distances/general use.

Any suggestions?

I am brand new to this...

Thanks!

For general purpose use taking photos of nearby kids outdoors, I'd probably look at the Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX. It's around $360 at online vendors right now. On a tighter budget (or if you don't care about being able to zoom in more), look at the Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX. It's around $185 right now.

Thank you for the advice. I just put a bid on eBay for a used Nikkor 18-55, based on what you recommended!

Nikon's 18-70 is a pretty solid lens as well. Mine died on me couple of years ago, but I probably just got a bad sample. You can get a used one around $150 or so. Metal mount (as opposed to the plastic on 18-55) and a bit more reach. I've been using an 18-55 on my camera at work (D50), and somewhat on my D70 and D1H. I haven't really been that impressed, in part because pics seem a bit underexposed.

If you're shopping for used lenses, it looks like keh.com (a reputable vendor of used gear) has few 18-70mm lenses in stock now. Here are some including hood and caps:
