Default Quick Lens Question

i was at work today and my buddy asked me about lenses in general and the ratings that are on the sides of them. For example my Nikon 55-200 with 4-5.6 maximum aperture ratings... he was why the range if that's the max. I go come to think of it, i can only get it down to 5.6, never 4. Can someone give me an explanation to give me and my friend?

Thanks.

Default It varies with the focal length.

The maximum and minimum apertures will vary with the selected focal length. As the focal length becomes longer, the max/min apertures will become smaller.

The specification is for the maximum aperture at the extremes of the zoom range. The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED has a maximum aperture of f/4 at a focal length of 55mm and a maximum aperture of f/5.6 at 200mm.

Thank you that makes sense to me. I guess I never noticed that but am definately going to be more observant next time I'm shooting in the lower range.

Thanks for the answers. This makes total sense. I guess I never bothered to try at those aperture settings at the ranges, but I will sure be experimenting with it.

Thanks again.
