Dust or scratches on the front element won't be in focus, and so won't affect image quality. Scratches can cause flare, and a lot of dust and dirt can block light, but that's it.

Make sure it's the Tamron 70-300 Di LD. Tamron makes another version that's not as good.

very good, sir.

I have confirmed that it is the Di LD. it's ~$160 new at Amazon. I was hoping to find one on Craigslist used, but to no avail. might have to buy it new and see what I think.

also, I just picked up a reverse lens mount for my 50mm f1.8 lens for super macro work. I think that may take care of my "real macro" needs. will see in a couple of days when it arrives!
