A while back I purchased a D-40 with 18-55 kit lens and also purchased a Nikon 70-300 VR for nature shots. Both lenses were nice, but I found myself always having the "wrong" lens installed when a shot presented itself. After much research I purchased a Nikon 18-200 VR. What a great lens. I sold the 18-55 straightaway, then compared the 18-200 and 70-300. For me, it was the same old story... too many times I wanted wide angle but the 70-300 was on the camera. So I tried an experiment. I installed the 18-200 and left the 70-300 at home for a week. Then two weeks. Then three weeks,.... Yes. Eventually I sold the 70-300. The 18-200 is such a versatile lens, for me it was all I needed 99% of the time. I shoot mostly outdoors locally and around here the longer lens just wasn't worth dragging along after testing the 18-200 VR. There have been a few times I missed the extra reach of the 300mm lens, but rarely. For your uses, the choices may be different.

I had a Tamron 18-200 before I purchased the Nikon VR lens. Big price difference (I got the Tamron for $55 used on Ebay). I didn't notice a lot of difference in quality but some people might. What I liked was the VR feature and it does work. I didn't have to carry a tripod everywhere.

BTW... here are a couple shots from my D40/18-200VR combo without lens hood. Resized for posting here.

It looks like you have answered your own question here regarding the lens as unless things have changed you be making the use of the 70-300 thus it is a waste of money.

LOL. Yeah, thanks Mark. I've edited my post so I don't hijack this thread.
