while that lens has HSM, its not the same HSM as in the sigma 70-200 2.8s and the 100-300 f4s. its really not that fast, so beyond the aperture limitations that john has outlined, it won't really be great for focus tracking either.

I have no doubt that the 100-300/4 will work nicely for you. I'd be pleased to hear of your experience when using it with a 1.4X TC for shooting sports.

that's one of sigma's best lenses, i am sure it will do you quite well! post some examples when you get a chance, i'd be happy to see some with and without the TC.

Agree - This Sigma is one of the best zoom around - It handily beats the Canon 100-400L and exceeds the Nikon as well. Check the MTF's at wide open (even with a 1.4xTC on) it handily surpasses the Nikon @ 400mm in many areas:

Don't believe it? Then check their respective CA... (and vignetting too)

Quite true, but the original poster was looking for 400mm, I guess one can us a 2xTC too with a 70-200 f/2.8 too, but I doubt the resulting combo will have the same MTF (or AF speed) as this 100-300

I'm curious about the image quality when using the 2xTC, too. I shot this week with the D3S/70-200/1.4 combination (don't have the 2x) and was totally impressed with the sharpness and focus speed. I now have no hesitation shooting this combo. Quick edits here: http://buckheadon-site.com/MHI%20ATL...ain/index.html. Some of the long shots are crops from only about 50-60% of the frame.
