Default Just got D90 and 55mm 1.8D, AF not working

I have a brand new D90 and a brand new 55mm 1.8D lens. For some reason I am not getting auto focus to work. I have the camera body auto focus selection set. It seems like that is all I should have to do, right?

The only goofy thing I noticed is that the lens is a rather tight fit. It doesn't glide on to the camera smoothly like my other lenses. Could this be a clue? I'm wondering if it's the lens that's the problem, or of it's the AF motor in the camera or something else entirely.

Do your other lenses AF alright?

Have you set the lens to its minimum aperture (f/22) and slid the lock lever toward the aperture ring?

Do all the lens contacts appear to be in proper condition?
