Default Refurbished Nikon 55-200 VR sale

Adorama has the Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR Lens, refurbished by Nikon U.S.A, on sale right now for $130 including the usual lens hood, soft bag, and lens caps with free shipping and a Nikon 90 day warranty. Nominally, Adorama lists this for $170, but normally sells it for $150. For those who are as cheap as I am...

In general, there isn't much that can go wrong with a lens unless it's the victim of foul play. But an optically stabilized lens has a lot more moving parts, and those parts move a lot. I think I'd be reluctant to trade a 5 year warranty for a 90 day warranty just to save $45.

No, the $170 list is for a refurbished unit. The normal sales price of the new lens is something like $225, if memory serves.

You're right. The Refurbished 55-200 VR is $130, while the new 55-200 VR is $225. So, yes, that's a $95 difference. I think I'd still have to ponder that, but if it works fine for 5 years + 1 day, that's better than spending $95 extra.

For $130, I think it's a pretty good deal. Even if it fails, the cost of replacement isn't that high.

Just wanted to close this out by saying that I got the lens and it arrived in proper woking order. Hopefully, it will either fail in the next three months or last forever. I've started using Capture NX, and correcting for vignetting and distortion on this lens is automatic with that. I think I'll find this lens perfectly acceptable for the foreseeable future for the telephoto end -- I have less interest in that than the wide-angle end, which will be what I'll be saving for now.

I have a refurbished Nikon 55-200mmVR lens that is now past its second birthday and doing well.
