"Saved Value"
This is a value you set for the lens that is attached... The camera will save that
value so whenever you attach that lens (and AF Fune Tune is turned on) it will be
applied... The camera can save values for up to 12 lenses...

"Default"
This is a "Global" value that would be applied to ALL lenses and would be on top
of any "Saved Value" you've already set for your lenses... I leave mine at 0 (zero)...

"List Saved Values"
Here you will find a list of all the lenses you have saved a value for... You can also
number them (I've numbered my Sigma 17-70 as "1" and my Nikon 70-300 as "2")
and you can delete them from the list here as well...

I use a tripod and 10 second delay and take a series of images of a static
subject, example; Three AA batteries placed approx 3 inces apart at a 45
degree angle... I focus on the center battery and take a shot then view it on
my computer to see if focus seems to be more in front of the subject (front
focus) or to the rear of the subject (back focus) and then work the offset
value in AF Fine Tune + or - until the subject is in sharp focus... Then, when
I think I've got it right, I go ahead and shoot random subjects at different
focal lengths and apertures and conferm that the images are sharp, fine tuning
more if needed...

Hope that helps...

Thanks for the info Wizzard.

Question though... since most of the time I'm using the Nikkor 70-300mm VR with the Kenko 1.4 TC to give me a 100-420mm range... do I do the "AF Fine Tune" with that setup or with the 70-300mm only?

Hi Jack55, just thought you might want to read this too.

Saved Value
Only one value can be stored for each type of lens. If a teleconverter is used, separate value can be stored for each combination of lens and teleconverter.

AF Tuning

The camera may be unable to focus at minimum range or at infinity when AF tuning is applied.

Live View
The tuning is not applied to autofocus during in live view

Thanks! That answered my question. Now to see just how much my TC / Zoom lens is off by...

Ya, the lens combined with the TC should appear to the camera differently than just
the lens by itself but that's just an assumption on my part... Also, I'm not as yet seeing
any problem with minimum or infinity focus but YMMV...

BTW, AF Fine Tune is one of the many features that swayed me to spend the extra
cash and go for the D7k over the D90...

Finally, I just bought the 70-300mm Nikkor lens, what a joy! Thanks everyone for your help and advise. Attached are 2 pictures straight out of the camera, no adjustments, only resizing. Your response will be appreciated.

Nice shots! Some cropping will make that second one better yet.
I sure like my 70-300mm VR.
