Default Kenko Tele Converter

Hello..I just purchased a D5100 Nikpn with a 18-200mm lens..What I am trying to learn is if I can buy a lens that can bring distant subjects like the animals at the zoo even closer without spending an arm and a leg..Are tele converters any good..and if so what would anyone suggest..I do not want a bayonett lens like I have seen just something to bring the subjects even closer than with the 18-200mm..Thanks so much

Have not been here in quite sum time..Personal problems have hindeed me but its great to be back

That's kind of a slow lens at the long end (f/5.6) so you may have trouble
with autofocus unless you have a lot of good light...

Here is a little info on TC's that's easy to understand...

Hope that helps...

Two problems:
  1. Not only do teleconverters increase the focal length of a lens, they also increase the f-number. Once the maximum f-number of a lens reaches f/8, the camera won't autofocus anymore. Putting even a 1.4X teleconverter onto an 18-200 lens will make its maximum aperture f/8 at the focal lengths you want to use.
  2. Teleconverters increase the magnification. If your lens isn't really good to start with, a teleconverter will make the flaws more apparent. Unfortunately, lenses like your 18-200 aren't really good.
