Default Tokina 28-70mm f/2.8 won't turn past 37mm...help!

Lens: Tokina AT-X 287 PRO SV AF 28-70mm f/2.8
camera: Nikon D90

I was shooting yesterday...I borrowed a friends tokina....it was working great although he told me it becomes really stiff between 35 and 28. All I had to do was turn it a bit harder when I got down to 35 to 28mm....in the begining while shooting it worked fine....then it stopped allowing me to go below about 37mm and the metering would stop working as well...I turned it back over 38mm and all is fine....It's as though something is blocking it from turning all the way. So I now have a 38-70mm lens

Did I make it worse?

anyone have any thoughts? Is this a simple repair or am I looking at something major?

thanks
