Default 18-200mm + TC-1.4E or TC1.7E ???

I have a feeling this is not going to go well but has anyone tried a Nikon TC-1.4E or TC- 1.7E
teleconverters on the Nikon 18-200mm lens ??
If they have was it a disaster or good?? I'm just wondering if it will give some more reach successfully.
Thanks

Hi,
According to this review of the lens done by Thom Hogan, no telecons can be used with this lens.

The maximum aperture of the Nikon 18-200 is f/5.6 from about 135mm on. A 1.4X teleconverter will add a full stop to that (a 1.7X TC, even more) putting the maximum aperture at f/8, so autofocus won't work, from about 189mm on. That's worse than without the TC.

The Nikon teleconverters have tabs on the mount to mechanically prevent their use on other than selected lenses such as the big prime telephotos. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikkor.htm#axs

Thanks for the replies.
I realised I would lose a stop but didn't realise that would also nock out the auto focus.
I wasn't aware of a TC not being an option anyway.
Thanks for the info.
I was so impressed by Zig 123 s pics I got carried away.
Not that my lens is in the same ballpark as the 70-200mm F2.8.Over here that lens is priced at 1599, thats got to be around $2500 and the TC 14 E is 399 somewhere close to $600.
I would love the set up but I couldn't afford the divorce.:-)
Great quality shots Zig thats got to be one of Nikons best lenses if not the best.

Hi,

Thanks for the high praise. But, truth be told, the camera/lens combination does the tough work.

I haven't had the pleasure of using some of the other Nikon exotic lenses so, I can't comment on which lenses are the best. But, Greg (Fieldspringer) has posted pics using his 600mm Nikkor that blow away anything I've posted.

The one thing that does continue to impress me is the fact that the TC-14E does not appear to negatively impact the image quality of the 70-200mm. Telecons usually degrade the IQ to some degree. That doesn't appear to be the case with this combo.

In most circumstances, 1.4X and 1.5X teleconverters don't impact image quality noticeably. It's the cheap 2.0X TCs that can put image quality in the Emergency Room.
