Default Slow AF kit lens...

Howdy peeps...
I was shooting some runners (fell/marathon) the other day and found Nikon's standard 18-55 VR kit lens to be quite slow in the AF department- and a great deal slower than Canon's budget equivalent.
Is Nikon's 18-105 any quicker in the AF department..?
Any suggestions for a swift focusing and affordable lens of a similar range would be appreciated.

I don't know of any affordable, super fast-focusing DX mid-range zoom lenses but I'm thinking you'd be better off with a prime such as the 50mm 1.8.

Are you shooting in AF-C? Have you tried just using the center focus point?

I always use center AF when shooting runners- and the AF-C does help matters- I'm just surprised how much slower it seems compared to the Canon equivalent "kit" lens.
It doesn't have to be lightning quick- as quick as the Canon equivalent would be fine..!

I don't think I've tried any action using the kit lens.

I have done some with the 55-200+D5000 and it really wasn't bad. I suppose the 18-55 is a good lens for the minimal cost but I never cared for it much.
