Default nikkor 28-105 3.5-4.5 D

Read many reviews on this lens before bidding and winning one on ebay, from a camera club. The lens looks to be in good condition, and takes great macro shots and wide angle, also looks good at telephoto.

Bought it to use with a new D600.

BUT it won't focus at mid-range on AF. Wouldn't fire at all most of the time as it couldn't find focus. Found a focus lock and focus on release setting that makes it fire every time, but mid-range shots are blurry. If I put my Sigma 17-50 2.8 focus is sharp. If I put on an 85 1.8 focus is sharp. Put the 28-105 back on and it will not focus at mid-range. Think I got a dud, or is there some issue with this particular lens on the new Nikon . . .

I believe I found the answer and it's a quirk of the lens having macro capabilities - from dpreview

The lens was stuck in macro mode and the focus ring has to be set in a particular range to get it back out of macro.

I was just about to post that answer & I see you found it by yourself. It's a great lens that I use on my D300 & D700. But - I've been stuck a few times not moving off of macro mode

The particular lens that I had, wouldn't go out of macro mode even if I followed directions - it seemed to be stuck there, so I returned it. Will try another sample sometime.

Found a mint condition 28-105 with b&w filter, front and rear caps and lens hood on ebay just listed with buy it now option last week. Having no problem with this sample and it looks like it had never been used. Am enjoying this lens now.
