Default ikkor 80-200mm f2.8 lens auto/manual focus switch quit working

my Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 lens auto/manual focus switch quit working a few months ago. I haven't sent it in to be fixed yet as I use the lens too much.
The ring works fine on Auto, but when it moves to Manual, nothing happens, it stays focus on where I last had it focus in Auto.
The ring doesn't lock either and sometimes moves when I'm shooting.

Can this be fixed myself, or does it have to be sent in?
I'm pretty good at taking notebooks and cell phones apart for repair.

NOTE: sorry... I forgot to put the N in the subject line. Can a moderator please fix that?
