Default Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 VR

Got this lens last week and am very pleased. I had previously tried the Tamron 150-600 mm and returned it on account of it being soft at maximum zoom. This Nikon is sharp at 500 mm. Only drawback for now is its size but seems like it is worth its weight! The focusing is accurate. The VR has a "Sport Mode" which is recommended for panning. Here is an example of a panned shot at 500mm f8 mounted on a D800. I did not test it at the max aperture since I typically use f8 for my aviation photography. I think I'm keeping this one.

I sold my Sigma C 150-600mm I've had the past 6 months last night and was thinking of getting the Sigma Pro 150-600mm. I'm also now considering the Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens. This is to be used with the new Nikon D500 I just ordered.

Which Sigma you had, the C or pro version?

You've had your Nikkor 200-500mm a few months now... what is your opinion?

I made another post asking some questions on these lenses too.

Jack,

I did not own the Sigma 150-600; tried out the Tamron version for about a week, but found it to be soft at the long end...a bit too much for my aviation photography. I've been using the Nikon 200-500m since about June this year and am loving it. Use it almost exclusively for my aviation photography. It is sharp all the way out to 500 mm and does very well hand held (i.e. the VR is outstanding). For the price, it is amazing.

I ended up getting the Nikkor 200-500mm VR to go with my D500. Loving it so far... will post some pics in the DSLR section on my new outfit.
