Been really thinking about getting a macro for quite some time and decided to go ahead and get one. Probablem is I'm on a very, very tight budget. So, what do you guys suggest? It's for a Nikon D-70.

Is there such a thing as a bad macro lens?

That's what the 3rd party manufacturers are specialized at... and might even cost more than the OEM too if they are better!!! :-) :-) :-)

Also try extenders and close-up attachments for the least $

You could try the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro Zoom II for about $200. I've never used the macro function but I know it's there.

How about a speed light? I know you need some form of lighting to get good shots with a macro. Is the speed light necessary? And if so, which really good inexpensive one do you all suggest?

Get the Sigma 100mm Macro 1:1 - you can get it for $100 on ebay and it is way way sharp. I took these with a normal lamp over head as the only light source (with tri-pod). And I could still get closer but the subject got boring!
