Can anyone help me to convince my wife that "I Do NEED" a 50mm F1.4 Nikon lens for Christmas. Any comparison photos with the kit lens for the D70 would be appreciated.

You could ALWAYS downgrade a tad and get the 1.8 lens.

Tell her they are GREAT for low light baby pictures - unless you don't have a baby. Then they are great for low light holiday pictures.

A 1.4 is a low light for anything.I bought a 50-1.8 to shoot a basketball game. I ran back to the store so fast and exchanged itfor a 1.4 after the game. Ofcourse at about $200 more. I panicked. Butfor $200 more it was worth my peace of mind in a lowlight situation with much more shutter control. I realize shooting fast moving basketball players is not the same as shooting a cute little baby just laying there looking at you,but with the ability to shoot fast action puts everything slower in my control in most situations without flash. The Nikon 50mm1.4 is a nice peaceof mind lense.

Get the 1.8 instead - the 1.4 is a cheap plastic overpriced Chinese lens. It's not worth the extra cost! Sorry bern.

Glass is glass, the mount is metel but the filter threads are plastic. Filter threads get the most wear and these wear down pretty quick.

Just because something costs 3 times more does not mean it's 3 times better. You can get the 1.8 for less then $100 and it's a better lens, just a tad slower.

For a mere 2/3 of a stop benefit, I agree with Grinder. Low light shots that require a 1/15s shutter speed on the f/1.4 lens would require 1/10s on the f/1.8, not that much of a difference - the shot will still be blured handheld. I would much rather bump the ISO up, or digitally "push process" 1 or even 2 full stops to make sure the image was sharp. Noise can be corrected with tools like Noise Ninja, Neat Image, Grain Surgery and so on. I'm sure the f/1.4 is nice, I just could't justify the small benefits with the higher price tag.
